The movie is a description of the almost ended old fighter Stoker fights against a young rising boxer and the shady deal behinds the fight. Stoker use to be a very good fighter in his early years of his career. But now he is 32 years old and approaching the end of his career as a fighter. This fight is very important to him. If he defeats the other boxer, he can save his dignity also prove his capacity as a fighter to his girlfriend. Stocker doesn’t want to lose this game by any means, so he doesn’t follow his coach’s idea to give up the game easily by laying down. After four round’s struggle, Stocker finally wins by giving the other boxer a knock out at the forth round. But the gangs are not satisfied by this outcome, because Stocker makes them lose their money. After the fight, at the back alley, the gangs make him paid by sacrificing his right hand. As a film noir movie, in order to make the movie as realistic as possible, many methods were used by the director. At the beginning of the movie, the director uses few scenes to descript the city. It’s an ordinary Friday night, audiences gathered here for entertaining themselves. There is a particular scene, in that scene, director didn’t shift the camera to another, and instead, he just moved the camera to another character. This is the way that people seeing things in real world, people just turning their head to change their focus from one to another object. The other main method that director used in the movie is when the camera portrays the fight, the camera was set outside the ring. This makes audiences in front of the screen feel that they are actually sitting outside the ring and watching the fight instead the movie. To make the movie realistic, the director used almost no background music in the movie, especially during the fight. There are only people yelling at boxers or the sound of punches. There is a really important hint in this movie that suggests the authenticity is the clock. The clock is a hint to audience that this is really happening. This reinforces the authenticity of the story. The time when Stocker goes gout is 9:17pm, when he goes back is 10:17pm and the film runs exactly 1 hour. In the movie, Stocker is portrayed as a hero. A hero that challenges not only things physically stronger than him, but also things can destroy him. To save his dignity as a fighter, he challenges a boxer that much stronger and younger than him and he makes it happen. He struggles three rounds. Many times he reaches the edge of pass out. But he finally defeats the other boxer. The camera is outside the ring and shot from the bottom. This position not only gives audiences the sense of watching the fight but also suggests the sense of looking upon a hero. Stocker also characterized as a hero by giving many close-ups. As a hero who fights the corruption within this industry, the alley scene shows that although Stocker wants to escape from the consequence, when he has to face it, he gives a really hard punch to resist.
